A well planned road system is an important key to any intermodal transportation and improves a community's livability and quality of life.

Functional Road Classification

One of the ways the Metropolitan Planning Office plans roadways is to work in association with the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration in developing a classification system for roadways. These classes of roads depend upon the function they serve - for example, streets which collect traffic from residential areas and go to larger roads are usually designated collectors.  A Functional Classification System is developed to categorize the different types of roads dependent on the amount of traffic they serve - from neighborhood streets to interstate highways.

Traffic Demand Modeling

The traffic-demand model is utilized by planners to forecast where traffic demand will occur and where deficiencies will develop in the future. The Lawrence Traffic Demand Model takes into account current and future traffic counts, population, employment and land use. This component is essential to the revision and completion of the Long-Range Transportation Plan, Transportation 2025.
