Aviation
Although aviation comprises a small part of the overall transportation system in Lawrence, it has an important place in the regional transportation system. The Lawrence Airport opened in 1929, and over the years has been transformed from a University of Kansas owned facility to a public facility. The Lawrence Air Terminal opened in 1986. Air service in and out of Lawrence primarily consists of private chartered air service. The Lawrence Municipal Airport today is primarily used as a research facility.
Two major runways service the airfield, 1-19 and 15-33. Current expansion plans, funded in part through a generous grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, will allow the airport to have larger, reinforced runways (15-33 will now be 5,500 feet long and capable of handling 69,000 lb DWG aircraft), reinforced taxi ways and additional hangers and parking.
Aviation Advisory Board

The Aviation Advisory Board exists to promote general and commercial aviation activities and interests. It attempts to find ways to fully utilize and improve aviation facilities. The Aviation Advisory Board also will aid the city and users of the aviation facilities in the area by obtaining and improving services subject to approval by the governing body. The board also receives and evaluates reports of poor or improper service by the contractual base operator, unsafe or dangerous conditions, or failure of parties or person to observe the airport rules and regulations.
