Thank you for the incredible turnout during the community event to help shape the future of Lawrence. This week long process has really been the beginning of launching a SmartCode in the Lawrence community. Once the final report is received this spring, we will be working hard to adopt the code to meet Lawrence’s needs.
To explore everything that happened during the charrette, click here or on the CHARRETTE WEEK tab above.
One of the first opportunities you will have to learn more about Lawrence’s SmartCode will be the posting of the final report from PlaceMakers on the city’s website at www.lawrenceks.org. Following the completion of the final report, the Commission and the community will begin the process of considering the code and adopting the ordinances and amendments to incorporate the SmartCode into our city code and comprehensive plan.
There will be many opportunities for public input during that process. I envision the City Commission holding study sessions, stakeholder meetings and providing multiple opportunities to listen to the community’s opinions and concerns. I look forward to striking a balance of keeping the project moving along while hosting a community discussion that results in a model that will shape the future of Lawrence.
As the SmartCode is crafted to meet the needs of the Lawrence community, we will have the experience of PlaceMakers supporting us. They have been working with staff to fit the code to us and we will continue to educate the community about the details of the code.
Again, thank you for your involvement in the week-long charrrette and know that your role in creating the future of Lawrence has just begun. You will be called upon in the coming weeks and months to take part in this process of planning for the future of our community.
Sincerely,

Sue Hack
Vice-Mayor
City of Lawrence
